About us
We are a small nursery based in Somerset,
although we tend to class ourselves more as a
small farm. We have a plot between Milverton
and Langford Budville, which was originally a
cottage for Farm workers, dating back to the
18th Century last occupied in the 1960s.
Unfortunately it has fallen into ruins, but since
taking the property over we keep finding
remnants from the previous occupiers,
including a very old weak Blackcurrant bush,
which we hope to revive and make cuttings
from to sample the fruit.
As a philosophy we tend towards organic
principals where ever possible, and have a
range of helpers including our ducks which
provide us with assistance in the garden and in
protecting our Hostas.
Meet our helpers
All our ducks are named after characters from
the 1996 Movie “The Bird Cage”, staring Robin
Williams, Gene Hackman, Nathan Lane, and
Dianne Wiest.
The first 2 helpers are Aggy and Sparty named
after the character Agadore Spartacus in the
film. They are 4 year old Khaki Campbell ducks.
Aggy was the runt of the flock when we
selected her. We knew that she would not be
the biggest strongest specimen but felt that she
could teach us a lot about ducks. She is very
quick, and is the best at being directed to deal
with slugs, and teaches the other ducks what is
expected of them.
Sparty is less forward compared to Aggy,
however she is a true DIY duck helping with
turning over soil, and right beside you whilst
you work.
We recently purchased a new set of ducks in
September of 2019, which are Buff Orpington
ducks from the champion winning breeder
Richard Betts. We especially wanted them as
they are incredibly pretty and much larger than
our Campbell ducks so can deal with the larger
more horrible slugs. These 2 are called Goldie
and Starina, and are helpers in training.
Starina tends to slightly smaller than Goldie,
but is very observant and watches everything
you do, and is close behind Aggy. Goldie tends
to be more reserved and tends to stay with the
other girls.
